Regarding: Bloomington Common Council to approve strong City Resolution
opposing New Terrain I-69.
When: Wednesday September 22, 2004, 7:30 meeting.
Where: (Bloomington Common Council Chamber/ Showers Building/ Morton
Street- City of Bloomington)
COUNT US! an Indiana Group opposed to New Terrain I-69 today states
that Wednesday the Bloomington Common Council will pass a resolution
that will mark a major turning point in the debate over I-69.
COUNT US! Director John Smith said, “We hope that state wide media will
report on this resolution. It provides official government
documentation of negative economic facts regarding I-69 that have to
this point been ignored.” “We are pleased that the City of
Bloomington is now unified in opposition to I-69, with their new Mayor,
Mark Kruzan approving the wording of this latest resolution.”
The Resolution makes strong claims that the economics are negatives for
the region and the state. This is in contrast to the usually
reported opposition to I-69, which is often claimed to be mainly on the
grounds of environmental damage. Bloomington City officials have
“called the states bluff” says Smith, by documenting their opposition
to I-69 with the I-69 study that INDOT claims supports building I-69
through Bloomington.
Citizen opponents to I-69 are encouraged with the City of Bloomington
resolution because INDOT often claims that each public official
supporting I-69 represents thousands of silent voters
opinions. Over 150,000 Hoosiers petitioned in
opposition to new terrain I-69 and 94% of 20,467 comments to the
Evansville to Indianapolis I-69 study opposed the New Terrain Route.
COUNT US! has posted the draft City of Bloomington Resolution on their
