Ah! $1 Billion...
one-thousand
million is a billion.
I-69 for Indiana = $3 Billion
plus! Click here to see $3 Billion
Journalist and politicians
would
have you believe that a Billion is just a “B” rather than a “M”. Maybe
they don't understand.
If you worry about your taxes,
please
consider:
I-69 in Indiana would cost
a
minimum
of $3 Billion dollars. (A PDF cost map)
That is just the cost within the
400
foot right away to build it with
untold additional costs and new maintenance fees ongoing.
(I-69 costs Indiana more than 3 times the above.) 100% of I-69
will come from taxes collected at Indiana gas pumps. Our gas tax
will be raised to cover the cost listed above. The money that is
not new taxes would have fixed existing roads in Indiana. To understand
this, see the comments of our State Senate Budget director Lawrence
Borst. http://www.i69tour.org/borst.html
.
Supporters of I-69 think
we
have spent too much on I-69 to turn back.
So far Indiana has
spent
$12,000,000 (Twelve Million) on the study of I-69. While $12
Million
is not a small amount of money, it can be represented as:
$1,000,000.00
+1,000,000.00 +1,000,000.00 +1,000,000.00 +1,000,000.00 +1,000,000.00

+1,000,000.00
This money did create work for the Evansville Consultants
at
Bernardin, Lochmueller and Associates. Compared to the obligation
of future Indiana Tax dollars to move forward with this Boondoggle
project, it is a small amount.
Please don't forget that to represent
the cost of I-69 built in
Indiana, we must show three times the $1 Billion shown in our
example
on the top of this page.
Jobs
We are told that NAFTA I-69 will bring jobs to
Indiana, especially the "undeveloped"
agricultural economies of South
West Indiana. Few still believe this.
In 2001, the U.S. Department of Commerce - Economic Development
Administration surveyed manufacturing companies in distressed areas of
Indiana (those below the national average in employment levels or
average wage rates).
http://www.bmtadvantage.org/eda/EDA_Survey.pdf
Only FIVE percent of companies
surveyed said that distance to an interstate was a competitive
disadvantage for them, and only SIXTEEN percent said that being
near an interstate OR major road OR rail was a competitive advantage. The top resource needed for both
distressed- and non-distressed-area manufacturers surveyed is help
finding skilled labor.
Only where the density of larger manufacturing companies is already
fairly high should planners consider making transportation improvements
a priority (e.g. along 41-70 and specifically not the mostly rural 3C
route).
There are currently two Interstate
highway systems already connecting
the same boarder cities in Mexico and Canada. Both pass through
Indiana. If there is any benefit to I-69, it will come at the expense
of other Indiana communities.
Education and a skilled workforce:
The state of Indiana is balancing
it's
budget by borrowing from payments promised to the Teachers Pension
Stabilization Fund.
The fund has an unfunded liability of $7.9
billion. Indiana must pay $6.1 Billion dollars as today's
teachers retire.
Withholding promised payments to one's employee's retirement fund would
not be a good practice
in business, why would this be different for government? Imagine if
Governor Kernan were spending your
retirement funds! The state of Indiana can not print
money.
For more on this topic: http://www.in.gov/tos/NR01-19-04.htm
Even
the token repayment of this money from lottery profits was
targeted by Governor Kernan to fund all day kindergarten. Two other
candidates Daniels and Miller in January 2004 have called the State of
Indiana “Bankrupt”. Our state's media have are now endorsing this
claim.
Taxes:
If
you wish for lower taxes
We hope that you might
give second
thought to some of our
Governments decision making.
Suggested solutions:
- Tennessee is now directing highway
surplus funds to the states general
fund. Illinois too has been directing DOT funds to their
general fund for debt relief too.
- No new terrain I-69 and No I-69 Gas Tax.
- Balance the state budget, now.
- Education first--- Support our states educators.
