| If anyone ever thought the Hybrid was a solution to a New Terrain Route
that would fix the environmental problems while perform better than US
41 & I 70, these web pages prove that the "hybrid" was nothing more
than a distraction.
Among the "core values" of the I-69 draft environmental impact study are the savings in time and the straightness of the route. The orange route on the picture to the right is the "mutant" or "hybrid" new route announced by INDOT six days after the closing of the public comment period in this elimination two tier draft environmental impact study (DEIS). It connects alternative #2 to alternative #3 along the Greene/ Daviess County line. The black section is US 41, Don't let the angle trick you, it's distance
is the same on both routes.
INDOT Commissioner J. Bryan Nicol is claiming that this is an EPA's proposal made on October 17th. Read the EPA DEIS comments and see if you find this a credible claim. Their 19 page comments is in fact very critical of much of this route (#3). It is clear that the EPA prefers IN 41 to Terre Haute and I-70 to Indianapolis, or 'no-build'. INDOT is the driving force behind the orange route that is twice as expensive(s-5), has little or no transportation benefit, little or no economic benefit, has been opposed by the last two elected common councils of Bloomington, has been opposed by the Marion County MPO for air quality reasons, and is the most environmentally damaging. Citizens were told that the selection would be a continual process of elimination with all possible outcomes on equal footing. Adding this route after the end of public comment undermines the structure of the DEIS and the public trust in the study. |
