A common misconception is that road construction companies will profit if New Terrain I-69 is built. This is based on another misconception that additional money will pay for the construction of I-69. There is no special fund for the construction of I-69. Federal money (80%) refers to the money that funds our INDOT budget, with or without I-69. Building I-69 is a state of Indiana choice over any potential INDOT project. Dollars spent on "New Terrain" I-69 are dollars not available for other INDOT construction, or maintenance projects. In the short run, building new terrain diverts road constructions/ repair money to buying of real estate and land filling of homes, trees and businesses. In the long run, new terrain requires increased maintenance such as new county highway sanding of roads in the winter and increased mowing budgets in the summer. These "New Terrain" expenses barring tax increases, represent a loss of budget for the road building/ repair industry. Homeowners who would chose to move to another state would remove tens of thousands of dollars from the INDOT budget and all benefit would be lost to the Indiana roads or even the Indiana real estate industry. back |
